Literacy is the foundation of opportunity, and the key to a functioning democracy. That's why we donate a portion of our sales to organizations working to improve adult literacy in America.
Approximately 43 million American adults lack basic literacy skills—one in five adults struggle with fundamental reading tasks. And more than half of U.S. adults read below a sixth-grade level, severely limiting their ability to understand voting ballots, medical instructions, insurance forms, newspapers, job applications, and everyday documents essential to modern life.
The consequences are devastating. Low literacy costs the American economy up to $2.2 trillion annually. Half of unemployed young adults between 16 and 21 cannot read well enough to be considered functionally literate. Between 46% and 51% of American adults with inadequate reading skills live well below the poverty line.
Most heartbreaking: children whose parents have low literacy skills are 72% more likely to struggle with reading themselves, perpetuating disadvantage across generations.
